Battle Church Choir

My original question was "Can anyone put names to the members of this group which I photographed in the early 1950's,  or remember the exact year it was taken "?

I received the following Email from Mr Peter Aitkens

Ivor, ref your photo of Battle Church Choir

I was most impressed with your site which I found whilst looking for information about the Home Guard.
I can identify  Robert G Stainton
He was a lay reader and stepson of Mr  Appleton who was the Headmaster of Glengorse school.

RG Stainton was a first class cricketer - he played for Cambridge and Sussex and went on to be the Headmaster of Glengorse Preparatory School. He was a gifted teacher and a task master of a cricket coach.  He died about a year ago and a feature obituary appeared in the Daily Telegraph

RG Stainton is 4 rows back from the front and sitting on the right of the gentleman who appears to have 'Wings' and medal ribbons on his robes.

Me- I was a Glengorse schoolboy who walked to Battle Church every Sunday and then went for walks down Powdermill Lane. As I saw your site I recalled those walks down the hill to Church and the awful smell going past the tannery.

Regards

Peter Aitkens
