Extract from The Times Newspaper : Saturday 27th January 2007

"For the first time, later this year, guests will be able to stay at a tiny cottage overlooking one of the most historic sites in Britain: the battlefield where King Harold fell to William the Conqueror "        

My dad says:

"I was born in the bedroom (circled) which overlooks the battlefield, on November 24th 1926.
The photograph of me sleeping in this bedroom was taken by my father when I was about two.
There was no electricity in those days and the cottage was lit by Alladin parafin lamps,
however I understand that the photograph was taken by candle-light using a
half-plate glass negative in a wooden camera with cloth bellows.

NO MOBILE PHONE CAMERAS IN THOSE DAYS !

My parents, brother, and grandparents lived together, all six of us, in this tiny cottage which at this time was provided for employees working in the Abbey gardens, a profession which I was reluctantly obliged to follow for a short period when I left school in 1939.
The outbreak of the Second World War was to be the beginning of the end of my family's working connection with the Battle Abbey Estate."
